Receiving 1/2 WOWS:

Matt Holliday launched a game tying home run that supplied basically all the offense for St. Louis as they lost 3-1 to Boston.

Adam Wainwright threw 7 innings and struck out 10 to only one walk. It wouldn’t be enough as he was the hard luck loser, 3-1 to Boston.

DAVID ORTIZ AND JON LESTER OWNED THE WORLD SERIES – Final WOWS Tally

Photo – Jim Davis – Boston Globe Staff

I completed WOO, Who Owns October, and showed that Michael Wacha and David Ortiz were the two dominant forces of this October.

It is difficult to argue against that result.

Now let’s take a look at the other postseason SullyMetric. Beyond owning the Postseason, who specifically owned the World Series. Who owned the World Series as a pitcher and a hitter keeping both team’s production in mind.

Each winning team for every post season game gets a pitcher and a hitter who earn a full WOWS (Who Owns the World Series.)
And at my discretion, I award a 1/2 WOWS to a worthy player on the losing team.

My explanation for Who Owns the World Series (WOWS) is HERE.

It should be no surprise that David Ortiz got the highest WOWS total. His .688 average, 1.948 OPS and 2 homers with 6 RBI were enough to earn that right. His 8 walks set the table for a lot of other heroics including the Jonny Gomes homer and the Shane Victorino double. He was the overwhelming shadow over the entire series, like it or not. His 3 1/2 WOWS total topped all hitters. Nobody else had 2.

Carlos Beltran and Matt Holliday each finished with 1 1/2. Jonny Gomes’ homer got his total to 1.

Meanwhile Jon Lester‘s two victories and 0.59 ERA in 15 1/3 innings almost got him World Series MVP honors. He struckout 15 and walked only 1, giving the Red Sox a pair wins in games where the Cardinals started Adam Wainwright.

His 2 WOWS led all pitchers.

John Lackey raised his total to 1 1/2 with the clinching win. Surprisingly Felix Doubront, who didn’t even pitch in the Division Series, also finished with a 1 1/2 total with his solid relief in Games 3 and 4.

So like WOO, WOWS crowned the two most worthy players for the World Series. Anyone who saw the Series and kept track of the games would have to agree that David Ortiz and Jon Lester owned it.

WOWS works!

FINAL WOWS TALLY:

Hitters

David Ortiz, Red Sox – 3 1/2

Carlos Beltran, Cardinals – 1 1/2

Matt Holliday, Cardinals – 1 1/2

Jonny Gomes, Red Sox – 1

Xander Bogaerts, Red Sox – 1/2

Matt Carpenter, Cardinals – 1/2

Allen Craig, Cardinals – 1/2

Pitchers

Jon Lester, Red Sox – 2

Felix Doubront, Red Sox -1 1/2

John Lackey, Red Sox- 1 1/2

Trevor Rosenthal, Cardinals – 1

Michael Wacha, Cardinals – 1

Adam Wainwright, Cardinals – 1/2

Madison Bumgarner And Hunter Pence Owned The 2014 World Series (#WOWS)

Did Madison Bumgarner get the Win or Save tonight? Oh it doesn’t matter. All that matters is that he dominated like no pitcher I have ever seen in my life. 1 run in 21 World Series innings? Being the pitcher to clinch the World Series?

It was a World Series for the ages.

Hunter Pence hit the homer in the top of the first in Game 1 that set the tone of the World Series. He would hit ,429 with a homer and 5 RBI. He got 2 more hits in the Game 7 finale and scored a run.

They were the pitcher and the hitter who owned the 2014 World Series.

Kelvin Herrera with his stellar relief work for the Royals earned 1 1/2 WOWs as well.

Each winning team for every World Series game gets a pitcher and a hitter who earn a full WOO (Who Owns the World Series.)

And at my discretion, I award a 1/2 WOWS to a worthy player on the losing team.

The Cubs have won their first World Series game since Game 6 of the 1945 World Series. Meanwhile Terry Francona lost a World Series game for the first time ever as a manager.

So who owned October and the World Series?

Each winning team for every post season game gets a pitcher and a hitter who earn a full WOO (Who Owns October.)

And at my discretion, I award a 1/2 WOO’S to a worthy player on the losing team.

But the World Series deserves its own stats. WOWS (Who Owns the World Series.)

At the end of the post season, we will see who had the highest WOO total as a pitcher and a hitter. The WOWS total will be kept separately. Each game now counts towards both tallies.

Well, this is the last game of October… someone will own NOVEMBER! Should I create WON? Hell no. I do too much of this stuff as it is!

A complete description of the rules can be found HERE.

From October 30th.
2016 World Series Game 5:

Receiving 1 WOO’s and WOWS

Kris Bryant ignited a dormant Cubs attack with a game tying homer in the 4th. He would add a walk as he helped top Cleveland, 3-2.

Jon Lester kept the Cubs alive with 6 strong innings allowing 4 hits and 2 Cleveland runs to earn the 3-2 decision.

Receiving 1/2 WOO’s and WOWS

Rajai Davis collected a pair of hits, scored a run and stole 3 bases in the Indians 3-2 loss to the Cubs.

Bryan Shaw kept Cleveland in the game by retiring all 4 batters he faced, 3 by strikeout. But the Cubs would hold on to win 3-2.

Well here we go. The World Series has begun and I am adding Who Owns the World Series to the post season Sully Metrics.

Clayton Kershaw made his World Series debut. Like he fellow multiple Cy Young winning Cooperstown bound compadres who kicked butt in their first World Series start (a la Greg Maddux, Randy Johnson and Pedro Martinez), Kershaw did NOT disappoint.

In fact he was Kershaw-esque!

So who owned October and the World Series?

Each winning team for every post season game gets a pitcher and a hitter who earn a full WOO(Who Owns October.)

And at my discretion, I award a 1/2 WOO’S to a worthy player on the losing team.

A complete description of the rules can be found HERE.

From October 24
2017 World Series Game 1:

Receiving 1/2 WOO and 1/2 WOWS

Clayton Kershaw used his World Series debut to dominate Houston with 11 strikeouts over 7 innings, giving up 3 hits, 1 run and no walks to earn the 3-1 decision for the Dodgers.

Justin Turner kept his October heroics going with a dramatic 2 out, 2 run go ahead homer that put the Dodgers on top for good over Houston, 3-1.

Receiving 1/2 WOO and 1/2 WOWS

Alex Bregman  hit a game tying homer, which was pretty much all of Houston’s offense in their 3-1 loss to the Dodgers.

Dallas Keuchel pitched into the 7th, allowing 3 runs over 6 2/3 solid innings. But he took the hard luck 3-1 decision as the Astros fell to the Dodgers.

It is not enough just to own October… One must own the WORLD SERIES!

In the regular season, I had “Who Owns Baseball?” aka WOB. The explanation is here.

Then the post season came about and thus was born “Who Owns October?” aka WOO. A full explanation is here.

The player and pitcher who each winning team gets a WOO. If someone on the losing team has an admirable performance (I’m looking at YOU, Justin Verlander), then they would receive 1/2 a WOO.

But the World Series is different. People complain that postseason stats and World Series stats are combined, resulting in Bernie Williams and David Ortiz‘s stats dwarf Mickey Mantle‘s and Babe Ruth‘s because of the additional rounds.

So back in 2013 in my Twitter feed came this suggestion from one of my most loyal readers and listeners.

You got it. “Who Owns the World Series?” or WOWS.

I am going to continue to keep track of WOO to see who has the best tally for the entire Postseason.

But it is also time to keep a separate list for the World Series. Will the leader of WOO also lead WOWS?

There is only one way to find out… keep track like a maniac!

Wasn’t that supposed to be a pitcher’s duel? Neither Sale nor Kershaw went 5 innings, despite a great first inning by Boston’s ace.

Instead, we had a back and forth offensive battle where Andrew Benintendi piled up the hits and Eduardo Núñez put the game away with one swing of the bat.

And remember when the Red Sox bullpen was a weakness? Not anymore. Los Angeles is now in a hole and need to figure out how to stop the Boston attack tomorrow.

So who owned October and the World Series?

Each winning team for every post season game gets a pitcher and a hitter who earn a full WOO(Who Owns October.)

From October 23
2018 World Series Game 1:

Receiving 1 WOO and 1 WOWS

Andrew Benintendi made the most of his World Series debut. He went 4 for 5 with a bloop double, scored 3 and drove in another to lead Boston to an 8-4 beating of LA.

Joe Kelly came out of the bullpen and threw a critical shutout, hitless inning, striking out 2 Dodgers and holding the Boston lead the led to an 8-4 final.

Receiving 1/2 WOO and 1/2 WOWS

Manny Machado drove in 3 of the Dodgers 4 runs but it was not enough as Boston won, 8-4.

Is Game 3 Over?

Will anyone be left standing for Game 4?

When Ernie Banks said “Let’s play two”, he meant it as a metaphor. The Dodgers and Red Sox played the equivalent of two and along the way showed how insane the concepts of “Win and Loss Decisions” are.

Walker Buehler pitched brilliantly, throwing 7 shutout innings. No decision.

Nathan Eovaldi threw one of the greatest relief performances in World Series history. Loss.

Alex Wood threw 1 inning out of 18. Victory.

Bananas. The Red Sox were a bad Ian Kinsler throw away from winning and taking a 3-0 series lead. Now they will be forced to start Drew Pomeranz and the Dodgers have images of tying the Series, 2-2 and giving the ball to Kershaw in Game 5.

And oh yeah, Max Muncy hit the first Dodger walk off homer in the World Series since Kirk Gibson’s shot in 1988. Maybe you have seen it.

So who owned October and the World Series?

Each winning team for every post season game gets a pitcher and a hitter who earn a full WOO(Who Owns October.)

From October 26
2018 World Series Game 3:

Receiving 1 WOO and 1 WOWS

Walker Buehler was brilliant, throwing 7 shutout innings, holding the Red Sox to 2 hits, no walks and 7 strikeouts. The bullpen blew his lead but the Dodgers would win the 18 inning marathon, 3-2.

Max Muncy reached base 4 times and ended the 18 inning classic with a walk off homer to give the Dodgers a 3-2 victory over Boston.

Receiving 1/2 WOO and 1/2 WOWS

Jackie Bradley Jr. hit a 2 out game tying homer in the 8th that set in motion the never ending extra inning affair between the Dodgers and Red Sox. He would collect another hit and walk two more times but Boston fell in the 18th, 3-2.

Nathan Eovaldi put on one of the great relief performances in post season history, holding the Dodgers to 1 unearned run and 2 hits over 6 super high pressure innings. But he could not stretch it to 7 as he surrendered Muncy’s homer and took the brutally tough 3-2 loss for Boston in 18.
